How many of these fashion references did you spot in Netflix’s Emily in Paris?
From Sex and the City to Gossip Girl, The Devil Wears Prada and of course, Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany’s and Sabrina.
Since making its debut on the streaming service on October 2, much has been made about the fashion on Netflix’s rom-com series, Emily in Paris.
And, really, it’s unsurprising given the sartorial pedigree of the creative hand behind not only the title character’s noteworthy wardrobe (Emily played by Lily Collins) but also the other cast members’ distinctive style. That name, of course, is Patricia Field.
Field is credited with leaving an indelible mark on the fashion landscape and indeed, changing the way we dress, by way of her work on Sex and the City. Dressing Carrie Bradshaw and her three fabulous friends, Miranda, Charlotte and Samantha, in one memorable look after another informed fashion trends and how we ourselves dress in our everyday lives—who didn’t consider adding a tutu or at the very least a tulle skirt to their wardrobe after watching Sex and the City?
The Emmy Award-winning costume designer was also the costume designer on fashion-filled favourite film, The Devil Wears Prada, along with, more recently, Younger, and now Emily in Paris.
For those of us who love a fashion and entertainment fix wrapped up in one must-see TV series or film, Emily in Paris has ably stepped up to the plate in a flurry of covetable looks and sartorial moments, picking up where Gossip Girl left off. Naturally, there are fashion references to Field’s past work on Sex and the City and The Devil Wears Prada as well as iconic on-screen fashion moments from Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany’s and Sabrina.
